Visualizing Surveys for Playworks

Playworks promotes safe and healthy play within the school day in order to enable kids to be active and feel included while building social and emotional skills. It runs programs during recess and after school in over 20 regions throughout the country.

The Question: What are the best ways to collect and communicate data?

Playworks, looking to understand how its programming benefits youth and teachers, sought an efficient way to administer surveys to all its programs nationally. Its small central staff and dispersed field staff made administration difficult. Playworks was also looking for ways to communicate the data from those surveys in a meaningful way.

The Process: Designing a replicable process

Public Profit developed a comprehensive process that allowed Playworks to distribute surveys to teachers at program sites twice a year to collect pre- and post-measures of students’ engagement and behavior. We collaborated with Playworks to incorporate the data into funder-mandated reports. We also created an interactive data dashboard that displays the survey findings.

The Outcome: Beautiful data at a national scale

Playworks now has the tools to administer close to 20,000 surveys annually. It is also able to effectively communicate the findings to teachers and other organizations, with minimal burden on program staff.

Founded as Sports4Kids in 1996, Playworks aims to make recess a positive and productive time for all kids. Playworks’s mission is to improve the health and well-being of children by increasing opportunities for physical activity and safe, meaningful play. Today, Playworks is the leading national nonprofit leveraging the power of play to transform children’s social and emotional health. Playworks currently serves more than 1,200 schools across the United States and reaches more than 700,000 students directly and through professional training services.
