EVALUATION

The MacArthur Fellowship is a $800,000 no-strings-attached award to extraordinarily talented and creative individuals as an investment in their potential. This program is intended to encourage people of outstanding talent to pursue their own creative, intellectual, and professional inclinations.
The Goal:
In 2022, the MacArthur Foundation engaged Public Profit (PP) and Learning for Action (LFA) to lead a decennial learning exercise for its Fellows Program. Public Profit and Learning for Action conducted a mixed-methods retrospective evaluation of the Fellowship, exploring the impact of the award of individual recipients and their professional fields.
In addition, the evaluation explored the extent to which the Fellowship has successfully expanded the field of potential fellows, in keeping with a decade-long strategic priority for the initiative.
The scope of the evaluation was huge – with data collection efforts bringing information from Fellows, nominators, selectors, Fellows’ peers, Foundation staff, Foundation board, and the public.

Ultimately, the study showed that, after more than 40 years, the MacArthur Fellows Program continues to occupy a niche in the field of award programs. The Fellowship makes a significant impact in the lives of individuals whose ideas, experiments, solutions, and discoveries expand our expectations of the possible.
